Run this Firestick setup checklist before installing apps, stores, wizards, or tools. It helps prevent the usual problems, including low storage, weak power, blocked access, missing permissions, and a slow Fire Stick.

Quick pre-flight checklist

Before you install anything, confirm these basics:

1. Your Fire Stick is compatible.
2. Your Fire Stick is plugged into a wall power outlet.
3. You have enough free storage.
4. Your Fire Stick is connected to the internet.
5. Your Fire Stick is updated.
6. Developer Options are enabled.
7. Install Unknown Apps is turned on for the app you are using.
8. Privacy settings are turned off.
9. Your VPN is ready if you are accessing third-party stores.
10. Speed and safety tools are installed after setup.

1. Confirm your Fire Stick is compatible

This setup works on Fire Stick devices, with one important exception: Fire Stick Select.

Use this setup on the main Fire Stick models, including Fire Stick 4K, Fire TV Stick 4K Max, and second-generation Fire Stick TV 4K.

The simple rule:

• Fire Stick 4K: yes.
• Fire TV Stick 4K Max: yes.
• Second-generation Fire Stick TV 4K: yes.
• Other Fire Stick models: yes, according to my guidance.
• Fire Stick Select: no, do not use this setup.

If you are using Fire Stick Select, skip this app-loading process because that model is the exception.

2. Plug into a real power outlet

This is one of the most important checks.

Do not power your Fire Stick from the USB port on your TV during setup, updates, or app installations. Plug it into a proper wall power outlet instead.

The TV USB port often cannot provide enough power, which can cause errors when installing apps or updates.

Use the wall plug before continuing.

3. Check your storage before installing apps

Low storage is a common reason app installations fail.

Go to:

1. Settings.
2. My Fire TV or My Device.
3. About.

On the About screen, check your available space. You want a few GB free if possible, for example 3 GB free. Another healthy example would be 9 GB out of 12 GB left. Your number does not need to match those exactly, but you do need enough free space.

If your Fire Stick only has something like 200 MB free, you won’t be able to install many apps.

Check storage first, then install. Do not start troubleshooting Downloader, stores, or wizards until your Fire Stick has enough room.

4. Make sure your Fire Stick is online and updated

Your Fire Stick needs an internet connection before continuing.

Then check for updates:

1. Go to Settings.
2. Open My Fire TV or My Device.
3. Open About.
4. Check for updates and apply any that are available.

Amazon pushes updates often, so check this before installing apps. If updates are available, finish them first while the Fire Stick is connected to wall power.

Once the update is complete, continue with the rest of the checklist.

5. Enable Developer Options the right way

Developer Options may already be visible on your Fire Stick. If not, enable it from the About screen by clicking your device name about eight times.

In short:

1. Go to Settings.
2. Open My Fire TV or My Device.
3. Open About.
4. Highlight your device name.
5. Click it about eight times.
6. Return to find Developer Options available.

When successful, your Fire Stick may say that you are already a developer or that you are now a developer.

6. Turn on Install Unknown Apps only for the app you are using

After installing Downloader or another installer on your Fire Stick, allow that app to install apps.

Go to:

1. Settings.
2. My Fire TV or My Device.
3. Developer Options.
4. Install Unknown Apps.
5. Set the app to On.

Turn this on for Downloader, wizards, and Unlinked after installation when those apps need permission to install additional apps.

7. Install Downloader only after the prep is done

Downloader is the app I use to access URLs and install third-party files.

The checklist version:

1. Open the Amazon Store.
2. Search for Downloader.
3. Choose the orange Downloader app with numerous reviews.
4. Download it.
5. Open it once to ensure it works.
6. Return to Install Unknown Apps and enable Downloader.

Watch out for fake-looking apps in the store. Make sure you pick the correct orange Downloader icon.

8. Set your privacy settings right away

After the core setup, turn off the main privacy options.

Go to:

1. Settings.
2. Preferences.
3. Privacy Settings.

Then set these options to Off:

• Manage Sharing from Apps.
• Device Usage Data.
• Collect App Usage Data.
• Interest-based Ads.

This is one of the first settings changes I make on a Fire Stick. It takes less than a minute and belongs in a clean setup.

9. Turn off annoying featured content autoplay

Adjust Featured Content because the Fire Stick home screen can play loud banner content automatically.

Go to Preferences and open Featured Content. Then turn autoplay off.

That autoplay behavior gets intrusive fast, so disable it during setup.

10. Decide on Do Not Interrupt notifications

In Preferences, open Notification Settings and look for Do Not Interrupt.

Enable Do Not Interrupt if you do not want notifications popping up. This one is optional and comes down to personal preference.

11. Prep your network with a VPN when using stores

I recommend IPVanish before accessing stores and apps because internet service providers may block access to certain content.

Get IPVanish, open the app and sign in, then connect to a United States server with WireGuard.

The United States location usually gives the best content access. One IPVanish account can also be used on unlimited devices.

12. Know where the app stores fit in

Do not start with stores. Start with this checklist.

Once power, storage, updates, Developer Options, Install Unknown Apps, privacy, and VPN readiness are confirmed, move to app stores and wizards.

To get the app stores on a Fire Stick, open Downloader and type the URL. Use this order:

1. EASIEST: TV Wizard. Type newstore.tv in Downloader to install TV Wizard, my own setup app. It installs the app stores for you (LinkDrop, Unlinked, LinkBase), so you skip adding them one by one.
2. LinkDrop, my own store: open linkdrop.store and click 'Explore the collection' to open the library. No code needed.
3. Unlinked: type unlinked.link in Downloader, install it, choose New Library, and enter the code 'firestick'.

Complete the earlier checklist items before moving to stores. If permissions are off, storage is low, power is inadequate, or network access is blocked, the store may fail before you can access the apps.

13. Add speed tools after the store is ready

Once the store is set up, install two useful tools from the Fire Stick Tools section:

• Task Kill Fire Stick.
• Virus Total.

Task Kill Fire Stick installs Fast Task Switch. I use it as a one-click option to kill unnecessary background apps and free up memory, which can help when your Fire Stick feels sluggish.

Virus Total scans installed apps and checks for viruses, Trojans, and crypto-mining software potentially running in the background.

14. Run Virus Total after installing apps

Once Virus Total is installed, open it, agree to the terms, and press Scan.

Virus Total scans the Fire Stick and reports anything suspicious. No issues found is the result you want.

I like using this after adding apps so you can quickly check what is installed.

15. Use Task Kill Fire Stick when the device feels slow

If your Fire Stick feels sluggish, open the Task Kill Fire Stick tool.

Click it to kill unnecessary background processes, free memory, and improve performance.

This is not a replacement for proper storage or wall power. Treat it as a maintenance tool after setup.

My recommended order

Here is the exact order I recommend:

1. Confirm you are not using Fire Stick Select.
2. Plug the Fire Stick into a wall power outlet.
3. Connect to the internet.
4. Check storage in Settings, My Fire TV, About.
5. Apply any available updates.
6. Enable Developer Options.
7. Install Downloader from the Amazon Store.
8. Turn Install Unknown Apps On for Downloader.
9. Disable privacy settings in Preferences.
10. Set up IPVanish and connect to the United States if using stores.
11. Proceed with sideloading or store setup.
12. Install Task Kill Fire Stick and Virus Total after your store is set up.
13. Turn off autoplay in Featured Content.
14. Use Virus Total to scan for threats.
15. Utilize Task Kill Fire Stick when the Fire Stick becomes slow.

Avoid these mistakes before blaming the app, store, or Fire Stick:

• Using Fire Stick Select for a process not supported.
• Powering the Fire Stick from the TV USB port.
• Attempting to install apps with minimal storage left.
• Skipping updates.
• Neglecting to enable Developer Options.
• Forgetting to activate Install Unknown Apps for Downloader, a wizard, or Unlinked.
• Opening a newly installed store app before completing permissions.
