How to Jailbreak a Firestick: The Complete 2026 Guide
Jailbreaking your Firestick is easy, just prep your device, use Downloader, choose a VPN, explore app stores, and stay safe online.
What jailbreaking a Firestick means in my method
When I talk about jailbreaking a Firestick, I mean setting up your Fire Stick so it can install apps from outside the Amazon App Store.
The process is simple: check the Fire Stick first, turn on Developer Options, install Downloader, allow unknown apps, connect a VPN, then use a store or wizard to install apps.
You do not need secret codes with the newer method. On some setups, you type a website into Downloader. With Unlinked, you enter the code 'firestick' to open the store.
This works on the Fire Stick models used for this setup, with one major exception: the Fire Stick Select is usually not supported for this method.
The full Firestick jailbreak process at a high level
This is the full flow. Use this as the hub guide, then open the linked walkthroughs when you need the exact button-by-button steps.
1. Prep the Fire Stick before installing anything
Start with the basics. Connect your Fire Stick to the internet and plug it into a wall power outlet.
Avoid powering it from the TV’s USB port. The stick may turn on, but weak USB power can cause update problems, failed installs, and random errors.
Check your free storage under About before installing anything. If the Fire Stick is almost full, apps may fail to install.
For the full pre-install checklist, use my Firestick setup checklist. That guide keeps the prep steps in the right order without crowding this hub.
2. Turn on Developer Options
Open Settings, then My Fire TV or My Device, then About.
If Developer Options is missing, highlight your device name and click it eight times. The Fire Stick will tell you that you are now a developer, or that you are already a developer.
Once Developer Options appears, use it to allow apps like Downloader, Unlinked, or a wizard to install apps.
Follow the full walkthrough here: How to enable Developer Options and Install Unknown Apps on Firestick.
3. Install Downloader from the Amazon App Store
Downloader is the main app for opening websites and downloading APK files on a Fire Stick.
From the Fire Stick home screen, open the Amazon App Store search area and search for Downloader. Choose the correct app with the orange icon, not a copycat app.
After Downloader installs, open it once to confirm it works. Then go back and turn on Install Unknown Apps for Downloader.
For the full install and sideloading process, use this guide: How to install Downloader and sideload apps on a Firestick.
4. Install and connect IPVanish
I recommend IPVanish because internet service providers can block access to stores, app downloads, updates, and links inside apps.
Get IPVanish, open the app and sign in, then connect to a United States server with WireGuard.
Once IPVanish shows that it is connected, press Home and continue.
5. Access a Firestick app store or wizard
The exact setup depends on which method you want to use.
The main store methods are:
- Easiest: TV Wizard. Type newstore.tv in Downloader to install TV Wizard, my own setup app. It installs the app stores for you, including LinkDrop, Unlinked, and LinkBase, so you skip adding them one by one.
- LinkDrop, my own store: open linkdrop.store and click 'Explore the collection' to open the library. No code is needed.
- Unlinked: type unlinked.link in Downloader, install it, choose New Library, and enter the code 'firestick'.
Each store has its own install flow, so the full details are in this guide: The best Firestick app stores and wizards.
In short, use Downloader to open the store website, download the APK or wizard, install it, press Done, delete the installation file, then enable Install Unknown Apps for the newly installed store or wizard.
6. Install apps from the store
Once the store or wizard is installed and permissions are enabled, open it from My Apps and Games.
With the Unlinked method, the welcome screen lists recommended apps for movies, TV shows, live TV, and other categories. That list updates every couple of weeks.
The order matters: prep the Fire Stick, enable Downloader permissions, connect IPVanish, then give the store or wizard permission to install apps.
For the store-by-store walkthrough, use the Firestick app stores and wizards guide.
7. Run the after-jailbreak safety tools
Two useful tools from the Unlinked store under Fire Stick tools are:
- Task Kill Fire Stick
- VirusTotal
Task Kill Fire Stick is a one-click tool that clears unnecessary background apps from memory and helps the Fire Stick run better.
VirusTotal scans installed items and reports whether it detects any issues. A clean scan will show no threats found.
Run both after installing third-party apps.
My recommended order
For the cleanest Firestick jailbreak process, follow this order:
- Use the Firestick setup checklist.
- Enable Developer Options with the Developer Options guide.
- Install Downloader with the sideloading guide.
- Install IPVanish and connect to the United States using WireGuard.
- Open Downloader and access a store or wizard using the app stores guide.
- Enable Install Unknown Apps for the store or wizard.
- Install the desired apps from the store.
- Run Task Kill Fire Stick and VirusTotal from the tools section.
That is the full process without repeating every button press inside this hub.
Troubleshooting notes from here
If something does not install, check storage first. Low storage is one of the most common reasons installs fail.
If updates fail or installations act strangely, check the power source. Plug the Fire Stick into the wall, not the TV USB port.
If Downloader or a store cannot access a page, make sure IPVanish is connected. This setup uses United States servers with WireGuard.
If a URL does not load in Downloader, try the same address with HTTP or HTTPS at the beginning.
If you install a new app or wizard and cannot install anything else, go back to Developer Options, open Install Unknown Apps, and toggle that app on.
Stay private on your Fire Stick with IPVanish
It's the VPN I run on my own Fire Stick. It hides what you stream and sideload from your internet provider, and unblocks a lot more.
Frequently asked questions
What does jailbreaking a Firestick actually do?+
It allows the Fire Stick to install apps from outside the Amazon App Store. The setup uses Developer Options, Install Unknown Apps, Downloader, a VPN, and app stores or wizards.
Does this work on every Fire Stick?+
This setup works with Fire Stick devices except the Fire Stick Select.
Do I need Downloader?+
Yes. In these methods, Downloader is the main app used to open store websites and download APK files. Follow this guide: How to install Downloader and sideload apps on a Firestick.
Do I need a VPN?+
I recommend IPVanish because internet service providers can block stores, downloads, updates, and links. This setup connects IPVanish to the United States using WireGuard.
What URL or store should I use?+
Use newstore.tv for TV Wizard, my own setup app that installs the app stores for you. You can also open linkdrop.store and click 'Explore the collection' for LinkDrop, or use unlinked.link for Unlinked and enter the code 'firestick'. These flows are kept in this dedicated guide: The best Firestick app stores and wizards.
Why do I have to enable Install Unknown Apps more than once?+
Every installer app needs its own permission. Turn it on for Downloader first. If you install a wizard or Unlinked, go back and turn Install Unknown Apps on for that app too.
What should I do after jailbreaking?+
Run the cleanup and scan tools from the tools section. Task Kill Fire Stick clears background apps, and VirusTotal scans installed items for detected issues.
